Grinch Hot Chocolate

To know me is to know that my favorite Christmas movie of all time is How the Grinch Stole Christmas (the Jim Carrey version of course)! So it only makes sense for me to hit play on that movie in front of a cozy fire, drinking a warm cup of hot cocoa. But not just any old hot chocolate will do! Of course it needs to be bright green! That’s right, this Grinch hot chocolate uses white chocolate chips and gel food coloring to get that iconic bright green Grinch color. Topped off with a tiny red candy heart, this recipe is not only fun, but rich and comforting.

I don’t know many people who do not enjoy a homemade mug of hot cocoa, unless you are like my husband who isn’t a huge fan of chocolate. This recipe a great alternative to the warm cozy drink. After all, white chocolate is not actually chocolate. It also happens to be so cute and fun for kids!

grinch hot chocolate

To begin, take out a large saucepan and place it over medium heat. To the pan, add 4 cups of the milk of your choice. Whole, skim, almond, any preference works here! Next, add in 1 can each of evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk. Also add in about 1 1/2 cups of white chocolate chips. Finally, add in 1-2 tbsp of vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste, and a pinch of salt to balance the sweetness.

Warm the mixture through, whisking occasionally to make sure the chocolate chips are dissolving and not burning on the bottom of the pan. This should not take long to heath though, maybe 5 minutes or so. They key is to get it to the point just before a gentle simmer, as you do not want the sugars from the chocolate and condensed milk to burn. And there you have it, delicious white chocolate hot chocolate!

Now that you have a base of a deliciously warming winter drink, the next steps will take it to Grinch hot chocolate status. The key here is gel food coloring. I find gel better than liquid because it is more concentrated. You can use less of it to get a richer color, and you won’t have a weird aftertaste. Now for this step, you can use neon green food gel, but if you cannot find that, simple grab green and yellow gel.

If using green and yellow gel, start by adding 1-2 tsp worth of green gel and about half that amount of yellow to the hot chocolate. Whisk to combine, and slowly add more green and yellow as needed until you reach the bright shade of green you want. If using the neon gel, do the same, adding as much as you need in small amounts until the desired color is reached.

So now you have bright green hot chocolate, but so what, right? Wrong! Ladle that hot chocolate into your mugs, because it is time to decorate. You can top this with anything you prefer, but for the sake of staying on theme here, I suggest whipped cream and mini marshmallows. You can also sprinkle on some green sanding sugar or sprinkles. And finally, top each mug with a heart shaped sprinkle or candy, you know, for the Grinch’s tiny heart! And there you have it! Grinch hot chocolate perfect for that holiday movie marathon.
