Get warm and cozy with homemade boozy peppermint hot chocolate. This rich, creamy winter drink gets a fun holiday flare with notes of peppermint and the adulty addition of vodka and kahlua! Santa won’t want milk with his cookies after he tries this, and neither will you.

Nothing reminds me of cold winters with my family more than hot chocolate. It was always such a treat for us, and I would get even more excited when marshmallows were involved. Feeling nostalgic, I wanted to create my adult version of my childhood favorite, and what screams Christmas cheer better than candy canes (and cocktails!).

Hot Chocolate

Now I am sure we have all had that instant hot chocolate from a pouch. Don’t get me wrong, that stuff is delicious every time, but nothing is quite as comforting and cozy as fresh hot cocoa!

Luckily it is as easy to make as the instant kind. For two servings, begin with 2 cups of milk and 1/2 cup of heavy cream in a sauce pot over medium heat. Whisk in 1/2 cup of sugar and 1/3 cup of cocoa powder. The cocoa powder will look like it is not absorbing into the milk, but keep whisking. Once the milk begins to warm the cocoa will dissolve.

Totally optional, but to make it extra rich, stir in 4oz of dark or semi sweet chocolate, or even a shot of espresso or some strong brewed coffee. Sprinkle in a pinch of salt too, to bring out the rich chocolate notes!

Boozy Peppermint Hot Chocolate

Trust me, homemade hot chocolate is great on its own, and perfect for the family, but to turn this into a nice nightcap in front of the fire, we just need a few more things.

Once the hot chocolate has come to the slightest simmer and the sugar and cocoa have dissolved, remove the pot from the heat. Pour in 1/4 cup of peppermint vodka, 1/3 cup of kahlua, and 1 tsp of peppermint extract. You will want to add these in after the pot is off the heat, otherwise you will begin to cook out the alcohol.

Pour into mugs and top with whipped cream and crushed peppermint or candy canes. Serve immediately! Pro tip, double the batch because you will definitely want more!
