This may be an unpopular opinion, but I stand strong in the fact that there is one superior dip/condiment that puts all others to shame! Guacamole is by far the best option when it comes to all things dipping and scooping. Full of rich avocados, tangy lime juice, and zesty cilantro, guac is the perfect accompaniment to all things Tex Mex…or maybe just all things worth dipping!

Guacamole Ingredients

The best thing about guacamole is the prep, or lack thereof. Some dips require chopping, draining, shredding, and baking. Not hating, but sometimes I don’t have the time to get my snack on! This recipe just requires a little chopping, and some mashing to get that aggression out. My guacamole uses only a handful of ingredients, each with their own purpose. No fussy stuff.

  • Avocados: The star of the dish also happens to be a low calorie, nutrient rich super-food. Full of vitamins C, E, K, magnesium, and potassium. Plus they have plant sterol to help maintain healthy levels of cholesterol.
  • Cilantro:  Cilantro is a must have in any guac I make. Yes I know it is polarizing, as some people have genetic dispositions to is, but I LOVE it. It adds a bright, zesty flavor to the guacamole that screams Tex Mex.avocado, onion, tomato, cilantro
  • Red Onion:  Red onion is mild enough not to make you cry, but adds just enough texture and crunch that you don’t feel like you are eating baby food
  • Tomato: I add tomato to my guac to add a little juiciness. Little bites of tomato bursting in your mouth really help cut through the richness.
  • Lime Juice: Lime juice serves two purposes. One, the acidity helps cut through the fatty avocado, and two, it also keeps the avocado from oxidizing as quickly. This means your guac won’t turn brown after an hour.

Making Guacamole

That’s it, just 5 main ingredients for the perfect guacamole. In a bowl, combine 3 diced avocados, 1/2 cup of chopped cilantro, 1/2 a diced red onion, 1 small diced roma tomato, and the juice of two lime. I also like to season mine with 2 tsp of garlic powder and black pepper, and salt to taste. Using a large fork, a potato masher, or even a mortar and pestle (to keep it traditional), mash all of the ingredients until you reach your desired level of chunky or smooth.

What to Serve Guacamole With

Like I said, guacamole is superior. So much so that it can go on or with SO many things. Take that, buffalo chicken dip!

Or keep it simple. Pull out a bag of tortilla chips, put on a good movie, and snack away!
